Gov Shettima replies Asari Dokubo, calls him a jester regarding his Anti Chibok Campaign

Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima has replied Asari Dokubo who has in recent times alleged that the missing Chibok girls is all a scam and the handiwork of the governor. In a statement by the Governor's spokesperson, Isa Gusau, Shettima described Dokubo as a jester who no serious minded Nigerian should take serious. The statement below...
"Governor Shettima is too serious minded to reply Asari Dokubo who is just a joker as most Nigerians regard him. As a onetime journalist covering the Niger Delta, I had come in direct contact with Asari when he organized a rally in support of late Gaddafi in Port Harcourt and also when he organized the 2011/2012 Isaac Boro lecture in Port Harcourt which he kept interrupting, taking over the microphone from people like respected lawyers like Festus Keyamo, intermittently speaking without protocol and without shame like a child. He is just a joke, no reasonable Nigerian takes him serious. He was reported saying Chibok abduction was a sham, I won’t be surprised if by next week the same Asari Dokubo leads another rally to counter the one he just held. Last year, Asari was reported speaking against Presidency, then he changed tune now we don’t know what happened but that is how he is, he uses the media for personal interest and some sort of blackmail." Continue...
“He wants to be regarded as a hero but I tell you that no one sees him as such in the Niger Delta that I had covered. He is trying to force unwilling public to see him different from who he is but like a say goes, ‘you can fool some people all the time, you can fool all the people sometime but you cannot fool all the people all the time. Asari dubiously took advantage of Isaac Boro event which attracts participants to say what he said so that the procession would seem like a support base for his isolated opinion. I saw some pictures of some girls in one house displaying some placards, from the faces, I think he probably assembled some of his immediate and extended family members and gave them placards. One person wrote on all the cards, the same writing, all of which look like a sort of Mickey Mouse scene in cartoon series. How can Governor Shettima reply a jester, how can he respond to such a play by Asari that falls far below the standard of Nollywood when he is busy working very hard with all relevant bodies finding ways on how to secure the freedom of his and Borno’s precious daughters in captivity?” Gusau said.
Gusau advised the President to distance himself from Asari...

Jay Z, Beyonce and Solange release statement regarding elevator fight!

Beyonce and Jay Z don't usually respond to gossip or speculations in the media but this time I guess the magnitude is too serious to ignore. The couple just released a statement to Associated Press. Read below
"As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident. But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it.
Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred. They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologized to each other and we have moved forward as a united family.
The reports of Solange being intoxicated or displaying erratic behavior throughout that evening are simply false. At the end of the day families have problems and we're no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We've put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same."

Defence Headquarters states That there are no US troops deployed anywhere in Nigeria

The Defence Headquarters has said that there are no US troops deployed anywhere in Nigeria, and there has been no arrest or operation by any foreign military or security troops in the ongoing efforts to rescue the abducted girls, as its being reported online.

The spokesperson for the Defence Headquarters, Major Gen. Chris Olukolade, released a statement yesterday clearing the rumours.
"No troop of the American Marines has so far been deployed in any part of Nigeria as is being circulated in certain media. International coalition is quite appropriate in handling terrorism being a trans-border and global crime. The public will be duly briefed on the areas of collaboration with allied forces in the mission to bring back our girls as the need arises. There is therefore no need to engage in misleading speculations while the mission is in progress."
Further stating that the pictures being circulated online were taken from scenes in other countries and not related to Nigeria in anyway.

Florence Ita-Giwa Lashes out at Her Haters in a Press Release!

You recall last month, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa celebrated her 68th birthday party in Lagos and as usual, practically all the Nigerian big shots and entertainment celebrities were in attendance and everyone had a good time.  Pictures were released on blogs but Senator Florence was shocked when she read very negative comments by people who insinuated she was a self seeking indulgent socialite, who squanders money and wasn't doing anything in charity.
An angry Senator Florence has now released a statement to address her haters and set the record straight. She also explained why she's always spotted with Nigerian entertainment celebrities who her critics say are not even her mates.
The PR reads:
"To say that I am upset about the cheap pot shots taken at me for celebrating my 68th birthday will be stating the obvious. If the authors of the hack job that was posted on net which attracted many adverse comments had bothered to research my antecedents before going to town with the tainted piece, they may not have put the cynical slant that they did on a routine celebration.
First of all , let it be known that I have no apologies to make for celebrating my birthday in the manner it was done. I, more than anybody else have every cause to celebrate as elaborately as possible given the many blessings and triumphs that God in his mercy has bestowed on me. I have had an amazing life journey, which has seen me through many deep valley experiences and exhilarating mountain top moments, so I have every reason to thank God and celebrate with my many friends, whose goodwill and prayers have enriched my life.
To attempt to portray me as an uncaring and frivolous member of the ruling class is to do a disservice to my political life’s work. From the time I entered the political arena over twenty years ago, I had sworn to put the welfare of my people above mine, and even casual observers of politics can attest to this fact. Ordinarily, I would have overlooked the story of my birthday posted on the internet as one of those things that prominent persons are bound to experience from time to time, but the negative comments the piece attracted leaves me with no option.
Perception as they say is reality and I owe it to the thousands of youths who have adopted me as their role model to correct the fundamentally flawed piece. Modesty demands that one should not advertise one's good deeds, however at a time like this when my honour is being questioned, I am constrained to mention a few of the activities that I have committed my life to:
Last Christmas I organized a Christmas party for 3000 displaced Bakassi children, in addition to distributing relief materials to displaced Bakassi persons on a regular basis over the years. At considerable personal cost, I have championed the agitation for the resettlement of the Bakassi people. Every year, I organize The Children Of Bakassi Red Ball where I invite my Nigerian and Expatriate friends to raise funds to address the issues confronting my Bakassi people.
I have adopted over 12 Bakassi children, they all attend the most prestigious school in Calabar ( Access School).
While these activities are by no means all that I do on behalf of my people, I think they are enough to put a lie to the insinuation that I am a self seeking indulgent socialite. As a matter of fact, my birthday celebrations are usually used as an avenue to further advance my agitation for the resettlement of my people. This year as part of the ceremonies, we unveiled the Crest of my Traditional Title as Mother Of The Efik Kingdom with the motto‘’ SERVICE TO HUMANITY’’ a creed that I live by.
While we are at it , I might as well address the other issues that appear to agitate some of my detractors, chief of which is my relationship with members of the entertainment industry. I have no reason to be ashamed of this group of patriotic Nigerians who have raised the profile of our nation beyond our wildest dreams. These young people have always offered their services to my many causes at little or no cost, it is only natural that I reciprocate their affection by being identified with them.
The other issue that appears to give my traducers sleepless nights is the fact that I don’t look my age. If they must know, in addition to God blessing me with good genes, I have made a habit of working out and eating right. I am 68 years old and have no desire to turn back the hand of time. Indeed I am proud of the fact that I am aging gracefully.
As long as I have life in me, I will continue to live up to my creed , which is ‘’ SERVICE TO HUMANITY’’ regardless of what ever my detractors say. My life is an open book, only the truly mischievous will seek to tarnish my hard earned reputation”.

Well spoken ..

NBC ban Update - PRESS RELEASE : INTERIM PMAN PRESIDENT KEVIN LUCCIANO SPEAKS ON BAN ON AIRPLAY OF NIGERIAN ARTISTS

Interim PMAN President: Kevin L. Gabriel.

PMAN Speaks on the current ban of airplay of Nigerian artists by BON & IBAN
The Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria is appalled by the recent development spearheaded by the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) and Independent Broadcasters’ Association of Nigeria
(IBAN) via an official press release yesterday, calling for the  immediate airplay ban on all media platforms on content from Nigerian artistes, the association which was created with the sole mission to PROTECT, PRESERVE, and PROMOTE Nigerian musicians has decided to react on the ban and on-going feud between the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria(BON), Independent Broadcasters’ Association of Nigeria (IBAN) and Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) calling for an immediate reversal of the ban in the interest of these artistes whom we know that all the above mentioned organisations have their best interests at heart.

The ban on airplay of these Nigerian artistes and their music on various Nigerian media platforms is from our standpoint very unfair, demeaning and discouraging. We all know without a doubt that these same artistes who have persevered and assisted us to build, today what is known as the Nigerian music industry, Africa’s biggest entertainment export to the world are the same people that are now being victimised. With this action, the association  foresees a situation where this ban will, rather than encourage well meaning members of the society, with musical talent to hone their craft and join the success story of the entertainment industry, reverse will be the case. We also foresee a situation where the bulk of the material that will be circulated on Nigerian airwaves will be foreign materials, celebrating alien artistes instead of embracing, home grown talent and our cultural heritage.

COSON in it’s own right by a mandate given to the organisation acts as a collecting society for these artistes, helping to monitor and collect royalties entitled to them. As a collecting society, they have since inception acted as a shield to these artistes protecting their intellectual rights. BON & IBAN are arguing that the tariffs and standards presented to them by COSON should be defended and agreeable with them, but we know that the ban is not the best invitation to the negotiating table.
Article 3.13.2.2 of the Broadcast code issued by NBC says: ‘For the purpose of free-to-air broadcast, Nigerian music shall constitute 80 per cent of all music broadcast’.
If this ban is sustained, and 80% of the music played on the various media platforms are foreign material, we should ask ourselves as
guardians of the music industry, if these media houses are paying the royalties owed to these foreign artiste and thereby side lining Nigerian music by Nigerian artistes, are we supporting them or failing them? We should also ask ourselves, if this ban which will invariably affect the rising profile of the Nigerian music industry in the world, economically and in relevance is good for us.

With these on-going conflicts, lets not forget the owners of this intellectual properties, the music owners, record label owners, recording artistes, the instrumentalists, composers, who have spent time and money producing and packaging, what we know, enjoy and call music, their interests should be significant in these agreements.
In light of all that has been mentioned above we ask again that the ban be reversed and that all the affected parties and major stakeholders in the entertainment industry sit down for a dialogue and reach a favourable agreement, beneficial to everyone involved.

Dialogue is the way, affirms PMAN

The Interim president of PMAN, Kevin Lucianno, has called for caution as the spat between BON (Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria) and COSON (Copyright Society of Nigeria) continues unresolved. BON had queried COSON's unbridled manner of approach as it concerns receiving artists' royalties in the country

COSON, reports as claimed arbitrarily decides on the amount it charges intellectual property users for property owners, especially those on the list of COSON.

Kevin, who expressed disgust with the manner in which the misunderstanding between COSON and BON has evolved, said the issue at hand could be amicably resolved and that there was no need for both parties to take on each other without considering the musicians who are in the thick of the issue.

Kevin Lucianno, also assured that PMAN would wade in as matters have taken an embarrassing turn following the outbursts between cohorts of BON and members of COSON in the media over the issue of royalty collection in Nigeria.

He has called for caution as the spat between BON and COSON continues unresolved. He said "as the industry continues to enjoy success in bounds, it will portend division to outsiders that the industry's stakeholders have found it somewhat impossible to sit dialogue and come to a benefiting resolution.

Through this rebranding, PMAN embraces its history while looking into the future with a revival slogan “NO MUSIC NO LIFE “, encouraging upcoming and existing Nigerian musicians around the world to become members of the union.
The rebranding of the union comes with a new office located in Opebi Ikeja, one of the central areas of Lagos State. Office filled with young, smart and approachable employees who ensure to give effective services to customers.
As the all new PMAN grows and moves forward, they plan to significantly increase their relevance in the society and stay committed to their members.

SEPTEMBER 2013 IS CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Every September, CHILDREN LIVING WITH CANCER FOUNDATION (CLWCF), an affiliate of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) and the International Childhood Cancer Confederation of Parents Organizations (ICCCPO) is calling on governments and ministries of health worldwide to intensify their efforts in fighting childhood cancer by strengthening child cancer care systems in their respective countries.  The two organizations represent over 1500 pediatric oncologists and  158 parent support organizations, of which Children Living With Cancer Foundation (CLWCF) is one, representing nearly 85% of the world’s population.

For this year, the foundation will be embarking on a month long awareness campaign beginning from the first week in September. For the first week, we are conducting “Open Air” Campaigns across local governments, Markets, Shopping centers etc. The second week will be dedicated to visits to various institutions from academic, financial, health to underpin the need for a holistic approach in the care for children living with cancer. The third and fourth week will embrace the Charity walk and the Gala Night respectively to identify and encourage corporate organizations and private individuals who have partnered with CLWCF in its 8 years of existence.

One of the most fundamental approaches to closing the survival gap for children with cancer in resource-poor and resource rich countries is the early detection of cancer.  Childhood cancers are often left undetected until it is too late. Children with cancer can be spared from some of the effects of the most intensive treatments if their disease is diagnosed early and followed by proper treatment.

CHILDREN LIVING WITH CANCER FOUNDATION is therefore calling for coordinated action in the provision of appropriate treatment, care and support for children with cancer especially those who live in resource-poor countries. Governments and partners at national level are encouraged to join forces to ensure that childhood cancer is diagnosed early and that measures to ensure this are in place.   Sadly, cancer in children is often not seen as a healthcare priority, in comparison with HIV/AIDS, malaria or other childhood illnesses such as polio.

Education and training are key elements in the fight against childhood cancer.  The exchange of knowledge and information about childhood cancer needs to take place. We are calling on government and well meaning individuals to partner with CHILDREN LIVING WITH CANCER FOUNDATION, as some are doing already, to run awareness campaigns to inform, not only the public, but health care professionals as well, on childhood cancer and its early warning signs, treatment strategies and regimens common in developed country settings should be adapted and implemented in resource-poor countries as there have been conclusive results showing higher rates of survival when this happens. According to the founder of CLWCF, Dr Nneka Nwobbi, “We do not need to re-invent the wheel. Action must be taken now”.

Pres Obama releases statement Regarding Zimmerman not guilty verdict

The US president said:
“The death of Trayvon Martin was a tragedy. Not just for his family, or for any one community, but for America. I know this case has elicited strong passions. And in the wake of the verdict, I know those passions may be running even higher. But we are a nation of laws, and a jury has spoken. I now ask every American to respect the call for calm reflection from two parents who lost their young son. And as we do, we should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to widen the circle of compassion and understanding in our own communities. We should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis. We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this. As citizens, that’s a job for all of us. That’s the way to honor Trayvon Martin.”
